Tuesday 15th June 2010 was a historic day for the relatives of those killed in Bloody Sunday and also for the people of Derry. The Saville report cleared the names of 14 innocent civil rights protesters killed in cold blood by the British army. Its predecessor the Widgery report claimed without any evidence that those who were killed had provoked the army with gunfire and nail bombs – the Saville report rubbished these claims and stated categorically that 14 innocent civil rights protesters where ruthlessly killed by the army .
It is historic that after 38 years of cover ups the army and the state have had to come out against what happened on Bloody Sunday and condemn the events. David Cameron one of the most self professed enthusiastic supporters of the military and its ventures claimed that what happened was ‘unjustified and unjustifiable’.
Eamonn Mc Cann was on the civil rights march on January 1972 which turned out to be ‘Bloody Sunday’. As chair of the Bloody Sunday Trust along with the families he has been at the heart of fighting for justice for the 14 innocent protesters killed on that day.
Bloody Sunday and the findings of the Saville report cannot be underestimated. What took place on Bloody Sunday was a perpetrated war crime which led onto a war for 30 years .The state and its army was responsible for the murder and far from being ‘ neutral’ ,the British state was complicit in one of the most bloodiest acts throughout the troubles and one of the bloodiest state murders in Western Europe of the last 40 years .
Come Along to hear Eamonn Mc Cann explain what the findings of the Saville report mean for us today .
